Helping Others in Voiceover: Why We’re All on the Same Team
A common misconception in voiceover is that there’s a limited amount of work and that helping others might mean losing opportunities for yourself. But that couldn’t be further from the truth. There is so much work out there, and when we help each other, we build stronger friendships, healthier communities, and better industry vibes all around.
Recently, I was reaching out to agents as I searched for additional representation. One of the agents who responded and I ended up having a great conversation about what a potential partnership could look like. It was going well until they mentioned one particular condition.
This agency preferred that their talent not be represented by more than two agencies total. They explained their reasoning, and I completely understood where they were coming from. Still, I wasn’t about to drop any of my current agents to fit that structure. So, I explained my situation respectfully, and we mutually agreed that it probably wasn’t the right fit at the moment.
At that point, I figured the conversation was over. But then the agent said something unexpected:
“If you know any other voice actors looking for representation, feel free to send them my way.”
At first, I thought it was just a polite line—a casual “let me know” kind of thing. But then I remembered a friend of mine who had been searching for representation recently. They’re incredibly talented, and I knew they’d be a great fit. So, I reached out.
I sent them a quick message on social media to ask how their agency search was going. They told me it hadn’t been easy and they weren’t having much luck. I told them about the agency, shared the info, and encouraged them to submit. A little while later, I found out they got signed!
That moment brought me so much joy. Being able to help a friend land a new opportunity and knowing I had a small part in connecting the dots was incredibly fulfilling.
The takeaway here? Helping others isn’t just the right thing to do. It’s also incredibly rewarding. We’re not in competition with one another. We’re all building something together. The connections you make in this industry can lead to amazing opportunities—not just for yourself, but for the people around you.
And honestly, it feels good to lift each other up. Your wins don’t take away from mine, and mine don’t take away from yours. There’s more than enough success to go around.
So if you ever get the chance to recommend someone, shout out a peer, or open a door for a fellow actor—do it. You never know how meaningful that gesture could be.
