My Experience Upgrading to a Professional Voiceover Booth

This weekend was a big milestone in my voiceover career, my brand-new voiceover booth finally arrived! I knew it would be large, but seeing it in person was a whole different experience. It was bigger and heavier than I expected, so much so that I had to call nearby family members to help me get it into the elevator and into my apartment.

Booth Assembly & Setup

Once everything was inside, the real challenge began. Assembling the booth. Moving the heavy wall panels into the exact position I wanted wasn’t easy, but after a few hours (and a lot of careful maneuvering), the space started to take shape.

After setting up my microphone, monitor, and other recording equipment, I was excited to try it out for the first time. One big upgrade for me was installing a ceiling-mounted microphone arm, which not only saves space but also gives the booth a clean, professional look.

First Impressions of the Sound

The booth looks amazing! It feels like a true professional recording studio right in my home. That said, I did notice something unexpected: my voice sounded slightly different inside the new space. At first, I was concerned something might be wrong with the acoustics.

Over the past few days, I’ve talked with fellow voice actors and audio engineers to troubleshoot the issue. It turns out, my booth’s acoustics are fine. It may simply be that I’m not used to the way my voice sounds in such a tightly controlled soundproof booth.

Still, I plan to add additional acoustic treatment to fine-tune the sound. This could mean installing extra sound-absorbing panels on the walls or door, placing a towel or absorption material on the table, or even making subtle adjustments with EQ.

Putting It to the Test

The real test came during a live recording session for a video game earlier this week, and it went flawlessly. No technical hiccups, no noise interference, just crystal-clear audio that the client was happy with.

Final Thoughts

Upgrading to a professional voiceover booth has been a big investment, both in time and money, but it’s already paying off in quality, comfort, and confidence. While there’s still some fine-tuning to do, I know this space will help me deliver the highest-quality recordings possible for my clients.

If you’re a voice actor considering your own booth upgrade, my advice is to be prepared for the size, weight, and setup time, but also be ready for the huge boost in your recording environment once it’s all done.
